El alcalde de Nueva York, Bill de Blasio , salió esta noche en defensa de la actuación de la policía de la ciudad ante las manifestaciones de protesta por la muerte con tintes racistas de George Floyd , ocurrido el lunes pasado en Mineápolis, rechazando las críticas por un incidente en Brooklyn en el que dos vehículos patrulla arrollaron a un numeroso grupo de manifestantes.
En un video en las redes sociales se puede apreciar como un grupo de unos 30 manifestantes cierran el paso a un vehículo de la policía con unas vallas, le lanzan botellas, bolsas de basura y otros objetos y, tras la llegada en apoyo de otro coche patrulla, arrolla a una docena de personas, mientras que el segundo vehículo hace lo propio con algo menos de fuerza.
Por el momento no hay información fiable sobre heridos, si bien la congresista demócrata Alexandria Ocasio Cortez dijo en un mensaje en Twitter que los agentes de los vehículos “podrían haberlos matado y no sabemos cuántos fueron lesionados”, al tiempo que reclamó que los oficiales al mando de los coches patrulla “sean llevados ante la justicia”, y que no se solucione el problema de forma interna.
Sin embargo, el alcalde Bill de Blasio, en una rueda de prensa de urgencia y en una entrevista en la cadena local NY1, justificó la acción policial ante una “situación excepcional” y “muy tensa” en la que los agentes fueron rodeados “con violencia” por parte de los manifestantes. “Los agentes tenían que salir de esa situación, estaban rodeados”, adujo.
“Si esos manifestante hubieran salido de su camino y no hubieran intentado rodear ese vehículo, no estaríamos hablando de esta situación”, insistió inquirido por la peligrosidad de la maniobra policial.
En cualquier caso, el alcalde reconoció que se trata de un “vídeo problemático”, que desearía que los agentes no hubiesen actuado de esa manera, pero los justificó porque la situación era cada vez más “peligrosa” para ellos.
“Creo que la policía de Nueva York ha actuado correctamente, hubo mucha moderación por su parte, pero si hay casos que no son apropiados, vamos a actuar en consecuencia”, deslizó.
Preguntado sobre la posibilidad de decretar un toque de queda en Nueva York como han hecho otras ciudades en Estados Unidos como Los Angeles, De Blasio aseguró que este tipo de acciones no suelen ser muy efectivas y que ese no es su plan por el momento, tras lo que pidió a los ciudadanos que regresen a sus casas para descansar.
Además, a diferencias de otras ciudades, el alcalde dijo que no tenía constancia de saqueos en la ciudad. “Las cosas están ya bajo control”, apuntó. De Blasio, que es vecino de Brooklyn, donde se registraron los incidentes más violentos esta noche con coches patrulla quemados, aseguró que la mayoría de los incontolados no eran personas de la zona, e incluso insinuó que muchos de los violentos provenían de fuera de la Gran Manzana.
