El lanzamiento a bombo y platillo del nuevo pasaporte británico, dedicado a la creatividad, ha quedado sepultado entre acusaciones de sexismo por representar en sus flamantes ilustraciones a solo dos mujeres frente a siete hombres, según nuestros compañeros de Reino Unido.
Las dos mujeres elegidas son la matemática y escritora Ada Lovelace y la arquitecta Elisabeth Scott. La lista de hombres es más holgada e incluye nombres como el escritor William Shakespeare, el artista John Constable y el escultor Anish Kapoor, representados mediante sus retratos o sus creaciones.
El nuevo pasaporte, dicen las autoridades, "destaca algunos de los mayores logros de los últimos 500 años en Gran Bretaña e Irlanda del Norte".
La directora de la fundación por la igualdad Fawcett Society, Sam Smethers, opina que "en lugar de celebrar y recordarlas, a las mujeres británicas las han borrado de la historia". A ella, que cree que las autoridades sufren de "sexismo institucional", se le ocurren muchos nombres como la primera feminista y escritora, Mary Wollstonecraft, Elizabeth Garrett Anderson, Virginia Woolf y Bridget Riley.
"No fue como si dijésemos 'vamos a ver si nos quedamos con solo dos mujeres'", según Mark Thomson, director general del Passport Office. Cuando le preguntaron por omisiones de iconos femeninos como las hermanas Bronte o Jane Austin, respondió: "Cada vez que hacemos algo así siempre hay alguien que quiere que su grupo de música favorito o su icono esté en el libro". En su defensa, añadió que tenían un espacio muy limitado con solo 16 páginas.
Twitter no estuvo muy de acuerdo, sobre todo miembros de un cierto 50% de la sociedad. Algunos galeses, escoceses, norirlandeses también se sintieron completamente excluidos del nuevo documento.
En Estados Unidos una campaña reciente reivindicó que los billetes de 20 dólares incluyan iconos femeninos, ante la enorme ausencia de mujeres en su moneda. En España la última vez que se imprimió la cara de una mujer en los billetes fue en los años 70, con Rosalía de Castro.
