Muere John Lewis, histórico líder de los derechos civiles en EEUU
El congresista demócrata ha fallecido de cáncer a los 80 años.
El histórico dirigente afroamericano y congresista demócrata John Lewis murió este viernes de cáncer a los 80 años, según confirmó la presidenta de la Cámara de Representantes de Estados Unidos, Nancy Pelosi.
“Hoy, Estados Unidos llora la pérdida de uno de los más grandes héroes de la historia de los Estados Unidos: el congresista John Lewis, la conciencia del Congreso”, dijo su jefa de filas en un comunicado.
“John Lewis fue un titán del movimiento de derechos civiles cuya bondad, fe y valentía transformaron nuestra nación”, añadió.
Nacido en Alabama en 1940, Lewis fue el tercero de diez hermanos en una familia de aparceros afroamericanos.
Fue uno de los impulsores de la Marcha en Washington por el trabajo y la libertad de 1963, donde fue telonero de Martin Luther King Jr. y su histórico discurso “I have a dream”
Lewis destacó como líder de los derechos civiles en la década de 1960 y fue uno de los dirigentes de las llamadas marchas de Selma a Montgomery de 1965, que reclamaban el ejercicio del derecho a voto de los afroamericanos.
Durante el conocido como Domingo Sangriento en Selma, la Policía Estatal de Alabama apaleó a Lewis y le partió el cráneo, una paliza que fue televisada y que provocó en EE.UU. un impulso contra la segregación racial.
También fue uno de los impulsores de la Marcha en Washington por el trabajo y la libertad de 1963, donde fue telonero de Martin Luther King Jr. y su histórico discurso “I have a dream”.
El primogénito de Luther King, Martin Luther King III, dijo este viernes en Twitter de Lewis que “era un auténtico tesoro de Estados Unidos.
“Dio voz a los sin voz, y nos recordó a cada uno de nosotros que la herramienta no violenta más poderosa es el voto. Nuestros corazones se sienten vacíos sin nuestro amigo, pero encontramos consuelo al saber que finalmente es libre”, agregó.
Último superviviente del grupo de líderes afroamericanos conocido como Big Six y liderado por Luther King, Lewis llegó al Congreso en 1987 en representación de Georgia, un puesto que ocupó hasta su muerte convirtiéndose en un influyente legislador.

Poco antes de año nuevo, Lewis anunció haber sido diagnosticado de cáncer de páncreas en estado avanzado (fase IV) y a sus entonces 79 años dijo tener intención de combatirlo.
Le quedó tiempo para vivir las recientes protestas raciales que provocaron el asesinato del afroamericano George Floyd a manos de policías en Mineápolis.
“Fue muy conmovedor, muy conmovedor ver a cientos de miles de personas de todo Estados Unidos y de todo el mundo salir a las calles para decir lo que piensan y meterse en lo que yo llamo “buenos problemas”, dijo en una entrevista con CBS, en la que consideró que “ya no habrá marcha atrás”.
