Mirar a los ojos de Kobe Bryant antes de un partido era como estar frente a un depredador. Su sola presencia lograba estremecerte. En el vestuario del Staples Center, noventa minutos antes de saltar a la pista, ningún periodista se atrevía a cruzar palabra con él. Abstraído de todo lo que le rodeaba, su mente parecía anticiparse a lo que iba a suceder en la cancha. Luego, se enfundaba su número 24, se abría paso entre los flashes y dejaba, noche tras noche, acciones que engrandecían una leyenda forjada en el aire.
Pero lejos de la competición, dejaba atrás esa coraza, lanzaba esa carismática sonrisa suya y se disfrazaba del tipo más enrollado del lugar. Así fue como se comportó conmigo durante la primera entrevista a solas que tuve con él en los diez años que seguí la actualidad de los Lakers para la Agencia EFE. Fue en julio de 2008, durante la preparación para los Juegos Olímpicos de Pekín. Me dijo que consideraba que la selección española, a la que EEUU se enfrentaría poco después en la Final, era “un gran equipo” y que el conjunto de Mike Krzyzewski estaba en el camino para serlo.
Bryant admiraba la unión de aquel grupo. Una cercanía y una química de la que no dispuso con Shaquille O’Neal en su primera etapa gloriosa en los Lakers. Sí, fueron tres anillos, pero sabiéndose escudero y no líder. Por eso, la llegada de Pau Gasol a la franquicia californiana fue tan importante para él. Llegaron otros dos títulos -esta vez como comandante en jefe- que le cimentaron como icono absoluto en Los Ángeles y en los Lakers. Y, tal y como me admitió la última vez que nos vimos, durante el almuerzo de nominados a los Óscar en febrero de 2018, él era plenamente consciente de que aquel hito no lo habría conseguido sin la presencia de Gasol.
“No hay debate alguno. Cuando se retire, tendrá su número en lo alto del pabellón. La realidad es que no habríamos ganado esos títulos sin él. Nosotros lo sabemos, todos lo sabemos. Estoy deseando que llegue el día en que reciba el homenaje, dé su discurso desde el centro del campo y vea su camiseta en lo alto del Staples Center mientras recibe el calor y la ovación del público que le ha apoyado tantos años”.
Eso se sentía a su lado. Electricidad. Magnetismo. Máximo respeto por la profesionalidad con la que daba cada uno de sus pasos. Bryant será recordado como uno de los mejores jugadores de la historia, sin duda alguna. Se hablará de él como la copia más cercana que el baloncesto ha visto de Michael Jordan, el modelo que decidió mimetizar y sobre el que esculpir su juego. Y habrá horas y horas de anécdotas e historias sobre su feroz espíritu competitivo.
Pero pocos conocieron la labor social que desarrolló muy cerca de donde hacía vibrar semanalmente a 20.000 espectadores. En septiembre de 2012 lo acompañé a un acto en My Friend’s Place, un centro de acogida para vagabundos ubicado en Hollywood y fundado por Kobe y su esposa, Vanessa, a través de su fundación familiar. Allí se proporciona cobijo, comida, ropa, duchas, transporte y otros servicios a jóvenes de entre 12 y 25 años.
En 2018, el número de personas viviendo en la calle o en albergues del condado de Los Ángeles era de casi 60.000.
“Quiero que mi carrera signifique algo más que anotar muchos puntos y ganar campeonatos. Saber que he hecho algo para influir en las vidas de otros y no ser solo una inspiración para ellos en el deporte. Quiero ayudarles a salir de la oscuridad. Para mí, eso es lo que hará de mi carrera algo memorable”. Descansa en paz, Kobe.
