Aunque apenas han comenzado las investigaciones sobre los motivos del accidente de helicóptero que causó la muerte de Kobe Bryant, de su hija Gianna de 13 años y de siete personas más, algunos investigadores aventuran como posibilidad la densa niebla.
Poco antes de las 10:00 de la mañana del domingo, hora local, el helicóptero en el que viajaba Kobe Bryant, de 41 años, impactó en la zona montañosa de Calabasas (California), causando la muerte de los nueve ocupantes que se encontraban a bordo.
El helicóptero se estrelló contra una ladera y estalló en llamas al tener todavía una gran cantidad de combustible, porque apenas lleva 40 minutos de vuelo.
El portavoz del Departamento de Policía de Los Ángeles, Josh Rubenstein, señaló que la División de Apoyo Aéreo del departamento decidió que sus helicópteros permaneciesen en tierra por la mañana debido a las condiciones de niebla y que no volaran hasta la tarde.
Mientras, la Junta Nacional de Seguridad del Transporte envió un grupo de investigadores especialistas en accidentes, según anunció Christopher O’Neil, portavoz de la Junta.
Por su parte, Kurt Deetz, un expiloto de Island Express Helicopters que solía transportar a Bryant en ese mismo helicóptero, recordó que las condiciones climatológicas en Van Nuys eran malas el domingo por la mañana. Añadió que la nave estaba en perfectas condiciones y que el accidente fue causado probablemente por el mal tiempo y no por problemas mecánicos.
Una aeronave segura
“La probabilidad de un fallo en un bimotor, en ese modelo de helicóptero, simplemente no sucede”, valoró Deetz, que declaró a Los Angeles Times que el helicóptero en que viajaba Kobe Bryant tenía un gran historial de seguridad.
El piloto dijo que ofreció sus servicios a Kobe Bryant desde el 2014 al 2016. El mítico exjugador de baloncesto viajaba en la nave Two Echo X-ray, de la compañía Sikorsky S-76B, y un registro de cola No. N72EX.
La compañía ofreció las más profundas condolencias a los familiares de todas las víctimas y se ofreció a colaborar con las autoridades en busca de conocer las causas que provocaron el trágico accidente.
Mientras, Deetz recordó que cuando Bryant se retiró de la NBA en 2016, salió volando del centro de Los Ángeles en el mismo helicóptero -pintado de gris y negro con su emblema de Mamba en el costado-, dijo el expiloto de Briant, y añadió que voló más de 1.000 horas con la nave que se estrelló el domingo.
Según Deetz, las condiciones de la nave eran “fantásticas” y que Island Express sigue un “muy buen programa de mantenimiento”. El helicóptero, construido en 1991, partió del aeropuerto John Wayne a las 9:06 de la mañana, según los registros de vuelo disponibles al público.
Las autoridades recibieron una llamada al 911 a las 9:47 h., y los bomberos llegaron para descubrir que el accidente había provocado un incendio forestal de un cuarto de acre en un terreno empinado, dijo el jefe de bomberos del condado de Los Ángeles, Daryl Osby.
El operativo estuvo compuesto por 56 personas (bomberos, un helicóptero con paramédicos, tripulaciones de mando y agentes de la oficina del sheriff).
Según las declaraciones de Deetz al Los Angeles Times parece que el helicóptero volaba muy rápido en el momento del impacto, aproximadamente a 160 millas por hora (casi 260 km/h).
Deez también explicó que después de un vuelo de 40 minutos, la nave habría tenido alrededor de 350 litros de combustible a bordo. “Suficiente para comenzar un gran incendio”, añadió.
