La ciudad de Mineápolis (EEUU) despidió este jueves, 10 días después de su asesinato, a George Floyd, mientras los policías implicados se acusaron entre ellos ante un juez, que fijó una fianza de 750.000 para tres de ellos.
Floyd será enterrado el próximo martes en Texas, pero este jueves se celebró una ceremonia en Mineápolis, ciudad en la que vivía desde hacía algunos años y en la que fue asesinado el lunes de la semana pasada provocando el estallido de las mayores protestas raciales del siglo XXI en Estados Unidos.
“La historia de Floyd es la de todos los afroamericanos de este país, -dijo el reverendo Jesse Jackson- ¡Desde hace cuatrocientos años, la razón por la que no hemos podido ser quiénes queremos ser y no hemos podido siquiera soñar con quién queremos ser es porque hemos tenido vuestra rodilla sobre nuestro cuello!”.
La metáfora se explicaba sola, ya que Floyd murió después de que un policía blanco presionase su cuello con su rodilla durante casi nueve minutos, tres de ellos con el afroamericano ya inconsciente, una escena que ha dado la vuelta al mundo ya ha provocado un terremoto político en Estados Unidos.
El reverendo argumentó que “lo que le ocurrió a Floyd, ocurre cada día en este país, en educación, en la atención sanitaria y en cualquier otra área de la vida”, por lo que instó a la comunidad negra a quitarse de una vez por todas la “rodilla” que les presiona el cuello y les impide prosperar.
Los policías, ante el juez
Mientras el principal acusado de la muerte, Derek Chauvin, sobre el que pesa un cargo de asesinato en segundo grado, no comparecerá ante un juez hasta la semana próxima, este jueves lo hicieron sus tres compañeros, que enfrentan cargos criminales por ser cómplices.
Dos de estos policías, Thomas Lane y J. Alexander Kueng, ambos novatos en el cuerpo, acusaron a Chauvin al ser el agente experimentado y el encargado de adiestrarles, y aseguraron que le instaron a no seguir presionando el cuello de Floyd.
”Él (Chauvin) tiene 20 años de experiencia. ¿Qué se suponía que debía hacer mi cliente sino seguir las instrucciones de su oficial de capacitación?”, dijo el abogado de Lane, que cumplía su cuarto día en el cuerpo el lunes del asesinato de Floyd.
Por su parte, el cuarto agente, Tou Thao, está colaborando con las autoridades desde antes incluso de su detención, según explicó su abogado, lo que evidencia una clara ruptura entre los implicados, algo muy extraño en casos con policías como acusados.
El juez, Paul R. Scoggin, fijó fianzas de 750.000 dólares para cada uno de estos tres acusados, rechazando así las peticiones de las defensas, que habían pedido cifras reducidas.
Los toques de queda y la violencia se diluyen
En la décima jornada de protestas raciales en EE.UU., muchas de las ciudades que habían vivido noches de caos, violencia y saqueos, como Washington y Los Ángeles, levantaron los toques de queda que han regido durante días al vivir movilizaciones mayoritariamente pacíficas y sin disturbios.
En Nueva York, sin embargo, con el toque de queda aún vigente, el gran despliegue policial en la ciudad ha permitido dispersar a los manifestantes y detener a todos aquellos que se han resistido a dejar la calle en una jornada en la que el grueso de la protesta ha ido a menos.
La jornada, sin embargo, no ha estado exenta de incidentes. En Buffalo (Nueva York) dos agentes han sido suspendidos después de empujar y dejar inconsciente sobre el suelo en un charco de sangre alrededor de su cabeza a un hombre de 75 años.
El gobernador de Nueva York, Andrew Cuomo, calificó lo ocurrido de “injustificado” y “completamente vergonzoso”, mientras que el hombre, que fue hospitalizado, está en condición “estable”.
En Salt Lake City (Utah), las autoridades detuvieron a un hombre que la semana pasada atacó a los manifestantes con un machete y luego les con arco y flechas al grito de “soy estadounidense, todas las vidas importan”, en contraposición a “las vidas de los afroamericanos importan” que abanderan las protestas.
Los manifestantes lograron reducir al hombre, al que golpearon e incendiaron el vehículo antes de que policías lo socorrieran, los mismos policías que este jueves le han detenido tras haber estudiado los vídeos del incidente.
