El fuego empezó en la parte superior de la catedral, indicaron los bomberos. Según el portavoz de Notre Dame, el incendio se habría declarado a alrededor de las 16H50 GMT.
Según un periodista de la AFP, inmensas llamas estaban devorando parte del techo del edificio, emitiendo un espeso humo amarillento que se propagaba a varios kilómetros a la ronda.
La catedral de Notre Dame, con alrededor de 13 millones de visitantes al año, es el monumento histórico más frecuentado de Europa.
