El presidente de Estados Unidos, Donald Trump, ha afirmado este lunes que ha recomendado “encarecidamente” a los gobernadores de los estados desplegar a la Guardia Nacional “en cantidades suficientes” para detener las protestas por la muerte del afroamericano George Floyd y ha avisado de que, si se niegan, movilizará al Ejército estadounidense a este respecto.
“Desplegaré al Ejército de Estados Unidos y rápidamente resolveré el problema por ellos”, ha indicado Trump durante un discurso pronunciado desde la Casa Blanca en el que ha hecho hincapié en “parar la violencia y restablecer la seguridad y protección en Estados Unidos” con una “presencia abrumadora” de efectivos.
El presidente ha clarificado que movilizará militares invocando la ley 1807 y en que los recursos federales han de destinarse a detener los disturbios y los saqueos.
“Voy a movilizar todos los recursos federales disponibles, civiles y militares, para parar los disturbios y los saqueos, para acabar con la destrucción y los incendios y para proteger los derechos de los estadounidenses respetuosos con la ley”, ha detallado.
También, ha informado de que ha tomado medidas “rápidas y decisivas” para proteger la capital estadounidense, Washington. “Lo que sucedió en esta ciudad anoche fue una desgracia total”, ha lamentado.
“Mientras hablamos, he enviado a miles y miles de soldados fuertemente armados, personal militar y agentes de la ley para detener los disturbios, el saqueo, el vandalismo, los asaltos y la destrucción sin sentido de la propiedad privada”, ha precisado. Mientras, también ha trasladado que el toque de queda de las 19.00 horas “se reforzará estrictamente”.
Además, ha asegurado que aquellos que “amenacen vidas inocentes y propiedad privada serán arrestados, detenidos y procesados”. “Quiero que los organizadores de este terror sepan que se enfrentarán a severas sanciones penales y largas condenas en la cárcel”, ha avisado, según ha informado la cadena de televisión CNN.
Trump, que ha afirmado que su Administración está “totalmente comprometida” con hacer justicia por la muerte de Floyd, ha criticado que, a su juicio, los disturbios y los saqueos dañan ese objetivo.
“Todos los estadounidenses se rebelaron con razón por la brutal muerte de George Floyd”, ha dicho. “Mi Administración está totalmente comprometida con su familia, se hará justicia. No habrá muerto en vano”, ha continuado.
“Pero no podemos permitir que los gritos justos de los manifestantes sean ahogados por una multitud enojada. Las víctimas más grandes de los disturbios son ciudadanos amantes de la paz en nuestras comunidades pobres. Y, como presidente, lucharé para mantenerlos a salvo”, ha añadido, reivindicándose como “el presidente de la ley y el orden” y “un aliado de todos los manifestantes pacíficos”.
Tensión en Washington
Momentos antes de que Trump comenzara su discurso, la Policía ha usado gas lacrimógeno para dispersar a una multitud que protestaba cerca de la Casa Blanca con el objetivo de que, después del mismo, el presidente pudiera acercarse a la iglesia de Saint John, para lo que ha tenido que cruzar el Parque Lafayette.
“Ahora voy a presentar mis respetos a un sitio muy, muy especial”, ha informado el mandatario, al tiempo que ha asegurado que Estados Unidos “es el mejor país del mundo” y ha sido fotografiado sosteniendo una Biblia.
Gobernadores demócratas critican a Trump
Por su parte, los gobernadores demócratas de Nevada y Washington, Steve Sisolak y Jay Inslee, respectivamente, han criticado los llamamientos de Trump para proporcionar una respuesta más fuerte a las protestas que sacuden Estados Unidos desde hace siete días.
Sisolak ha acusado a Trump de “incitar la combatividad, avivar las tensiones raciales y crear división cuando necesitamos la unidad más que nunca”, al tiempo que ha asegurado, como comandante en jefe de la Guardia Nacional de Nevada, que los militares “han cumplido con su deber de proteger” a la población del estado, ha informado la CNN.
Por su parte, Inslee ha afirmado que Trump “ha demostrado en repetidas ocasiones que es incapaz de gobernar” y le ha acusado de mostrar “nada más que falsa bravuconería en todo el caos que ha acompañado su tiempo en el cargo”.
“Nuestro país se define por nuestro carácter colectivo e ideales democráticos, no por llamamientos reaccionarios a la división y no por amenazar a los estadounidenses con su propio Ejército”, ha agregado Inslee en un comunicado.
También el gobernador de Illinois, el demócrata J. B. Pritzker, ha criticado la amenaza de Trump de movilizar al Ejército estadounidense para sofocar las protestas, rechazando que el Gobierno federal “pueda enviar tropas al estado de Illinois”.
El gobernador del estado de Nueva York, Andrew Cuomo, ha dicho a Trump “no gracias” en referencia a su amenaza de desplegar al Ejército, según informaciones de la citada cadena de televisión.
Miles de personas se han manifestado en todo el país tras la muerte el pasado 25 de mayo de Floyd, tras ser reducido con una rodilla en el cuello por Derek Chauvin, un agente de raza blanca que ya está detenido e imputado por homicidio en tercer grado.
