Las protestas no cesan en Estados Unidos, donde al menos 40 ciudades han decretado el toque de queda y permanecen bajo custodia de la Guardia Nacional, e incluso este martes la capital estadounidense vivió un inesperado cacerolazo mientras los manifestantes continuaban frente a la Casa Blanca.
Más de una semana después de que el afroamericano George Floyd muriera por asfixia debido a la presión que ejercía sobre su cuello la rodilla de un policía blanco, en distintas ciudades estadounidenses se repiten las escenas de personas recorriendo las calles, aunque los destrozos y saqueos de otras jornadas han amainado.
Se escuchan cacerolas en Washington
Un día después de que el presidente estadounidense, Donald Trump, anunciara el envío de efectivos de la Guardia Nacional para que se aplicara “estrictamente” el toque de queda en Washington, una multitud mucho mayor que la del lunes, con miles de personas, se congregó por la tarde en el centro de la capital del país.
“No tenéis vergüenza, en la Casa Blanca hay un racista”, coreó un grupo situado en la primera línea de la protesta en Washington, según constató Efe, al dirigirse a las fuerzas de seguridad situadas al otro lado de una enorme valla metálica, de unos dos metros y medio de altura, instalada a lo largo del extremo norte del parque Lafayette, contiguo a la residencia presidencial.
Y justo a las 19.00 hora local, cuando daba inicio la restricción en la capital, las cacerolas empezaron a sonar en algunas zonas, en respuesta a una convocatoria que circuló en redes sociales, con la intención de sumarse a las protestas.
“Esta noche. 7pm. Consigue tus ollas, consigue tus cucharas, dirígete a una ventana o balcón abierto, golpea como el infierno”, se leía en uno de los mensajes en Twitter, cuyo autor explicaba que “se llama cacerolazo” y “lo perfeccionaron en América Latina como una forma de protestar contra los regímenes autoritarios durante el toque de queda”.
La propuesta surgió aparentemente de la pregunta de otra persona sobre la forma más segura para unir sus voces durante la noche y enviar el mensaje de apoyo al lema que los manifestantes repiten en distintos puntos del país: “Sin justicia no hay paz”.
La Quinta Avenida, un día después del caos
La salida del sol y el fin del primer día toque de queda en Nueva York en 80 años dejaron al descubierto este martes la magnitud de los destrozos causados por los manifestantes en la glamurosa Quinta Avenida de Manhattan.
Los escaparates de la avenida símbolo de la opulencia y el poder de la Gran Manzana lucían enormes paredes de listones de madera levantadas precipitadamente para evitar los saqueos que acostumbran a seguir a las protestas pacíficas contra el racismo y la brutalidad policial.
A pocas horas de que entrara en vigor el segundo toque de queda consecutivo, el centro de Nueva York parecía una ciudad tomada, apenas sin autos ni gente en las calles, como si volviera a exhibirse la pandemia del coronavirus.
En Nueva York se efectuaron durante la primera jornada del toque de queda más de 700 arrestos, con diferencia el mayor número desde el inicio de las protestas desencadenadas por la muerte en Minesota de Floyd.
Los saqueos en Nueva York fueron motivo de un desencuentro entre el gobernador del estado, Andrew Cuomo, y el alcalde de la Gran Manzana, el también demócrata Bill de Blasio.
“Lo que ocurrió en la ciudad de Nueva York fue inexcusable”, dijo el gobernador sobre los disturbios y saqueos en comercios registrados durante la noche anterior .
Cuomo había sido previamente criticado por Trump, quien afirmó este martes que Nueva York quedó “hecha pedazos” y se quejó de que Cuomo hubiese rechazado el envío de la “dominadora” Guardia Nacional.
Protestas tempranas en respuesta a restricciones
También este martes miles de manifestantes abarrotaron las calles de Los Ángeles en una serie de protestas pacíficas que ante el toque de queda declarado en todo el condado desde las 6 de la tarde han sido adelantadas.
Las marchas, que fueron especialmente numerosas, transitaron por zonas emblemáticas de Hollywood y el Downtown.
El tono tranquilo de estas protestas de día contrastó con las escenas de saqueos y disturbios que han obligado a decretar el estado de emergencia y que se han saldado con 2.700 detenciones a lo largo de cuatro noches consecutivas.
Mientras que en el centro de Florida, dos mujeres fueron arrestadas hoy por vandalizar una casa de vacaciones del ahora expolicía Derek Chauvin, el implicado en la muerte de Floyd, que enfrenta cargos de asesinato por esa acción.
