La UE urge a EEUU a reconsiderar la decisión de romper lazos con la OMS
El mandatario estadounidense, Donald Trump, ha acusado a la Organización de "chinocéntrica”.
La Unión Europea ha pedido este sábado a Estados Unidos que “reconsidere” la decisión de romper su relación con la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) ya que la cooperación global es “la única vía efectiva y viable para ganar la batalla” contra la pandemia mundial de coronavirus.
“La OMS tiene que seguir siendo capaz de liderar la respuesta internacional a pandemias, actuales y futuras. Para ello, la participación y apoyo de todos es requerida y muy necesaria”, han expresado en un comunicado conjunto el alto representante para la política exterior de la UE, Josep Borrell, y la presidenta de la Comisión Europea, Ursula von der Leyen.
“Es el momento de la cooperación reforzada y soluciones comunes. Las acciones que debilitan los resultados internacionales deben evitarse. En este contexto, urgimos a EEUU a reconsiderar la anunciada decisión”, añaden.
La llamada europea se produce después de que el presidente estadounidense, Donald Trump, anunciase este viernes la “ruptura” de las relaciones de su país con la OMS.
Plazo de 30 días a la ONU
La decisión llega mes y medio después de que congelara temporalmente los fondos que EEUU aporta a la OMS y diez días después de que amenazara con retirarse de esa organización, a la que acusa de estar “sesgada” a favor de China y de haber gestionado mal la emergencia sanitaria del nuevo coronavirus.
El 18 de mayo Trump dio un plazo de 30 días a esa agencia de la ONU para acometer unas reformas que no especificó, o de lo contrario cortaría permanentemente los fondos a la institución. Aunque todavía no ha pasado ni la mitad de ese plazo, Trump lo dio por concluido este viernes al afirmar que la OMS “se ha negado” a “acometer las reformas solicitadas”.
Los dirigentes comunitarios han recordado este sábado en su comunicado que el 19 de mayo todos los miembros de la OMS acordaron iniciar “en el momento más temprano apropiado” una evaluación “imparcial, independiente y amplia para revisar las lecciones aprendidas de la respuesta internacional al coronavirus”.
“La evaluación de nuestro desempeño colectivo a nivel internacional es solo un proceso necesario que busca reforzar la seguridad sanitaria”,a afirmado la UE, que ha reiterado su apoyo a la OMS e incrementado su aportación financiera.
Se espera que el anuncio de Trump suponga la suspensión permanente de casi toda la contribución de Estados Unidos a la organización, que incluye la aportación de entre 400 y 500 millones de dólares anuales, aproximadamente el 15 % del presupuesto total.
Sin embargo, no está claro que Estados Unidos planee retirarse formalmente de la organización, de la que forma parte desde su creación en 1948, y la Casa Blanca no quiso aclarar el viernes ese punto.
