El Vaticano sienta en el banquillo a un cardenal acusado de corrupción por primera vez en la historia
Angelo Becciu está acusado de, supuestamente, haber comprado un inmueble que dejó un agujero de 400 millones en las arcas del Estado.
El Vaticano afrontará una jornada histórica este martes, pues esta será la primera vez en su historia que uno de sus ex altos cargos será procesado por corrupción. Se trata del cardenal Angelo Becciu, exintengrante de la Secretaría de Estado vaticana, quien se sentará en el banquillo de los acusados constituyendo la primera vez que la justicia vaticana encausa a un miembro del colegio cardenalicio, el órgano representante de la alta jerarquía eclesiástica.
Becciu fue cesado el pasado mes de septiembre de su cargo como prefecto de la Congregación para las Causas de los Santos y despojado de sus derechos relacionados con el Cardenalato por su supuesta implicación en un caso de malversación de fondos. No obstante, el encausado continúa viviendo en un apartamento del edificio de la Congregación para la Doctrina de la Fe.
Los jueces del Vaticano lo procesarán junto a otras nueve personas también imputadas por distintos delitos relacionados con la supuesta compraventa opaca de un edificio de lujo en el centro de Londres que, según las investigaciones, ha dejado un agujero de casi 400 millones de euros en las arcas vaticanas.
Los otros encausados
Entre las personas que irán a juicio también se encuentra el broker Gianluigi Torzi, a quien El Vaticano acusa de haberle engañado en la compraventa del inmueble de Londres y que consiguió una paga de 15 millones de euros por devolver el edificio a sus legítimos propietarios.
Además, están procesados René Brülhart, ex presidente de la Autoridad de Supervisión Financiera de la Santa Sede (AIF), a quien la Fiscalía acusa de abuso de funciones; o el monseñor Mauro Carlino, antiguo secretario del sustituto de la Secretaría de Estado, enjuiciado por los presuntos delitos de extorsión y de abuso de funciones.
