Despiden al policía de Atlanta que mató a tiros al joven negro Rayshard Brooks
Su compañero Devin Bronsan, que participó en un forcejeo con la víctima, se encuentra de baja administrativa.
La Policía de Atlanta (Georgia, EEUU) ha confirmado este domingo que ha despedido a un agente blanco que mató a tiros este viernes al joven negro Rayshard Brooks, y que ha detenido a al menos 36 personas tras una noche de intensas protestas que incluyeron el incendio de un restaurante.
Un portavoz de la Policía de Atlanta, Carlos Campos, ha asegurado a primera hora del domingo a varios medios que el agente que disparó a Brooks, identificado como Garrett Rolfe, ha sido despedido, mientras que su compañero Devin Bronsan, que participó en un forcejeo con la víctima, se encuentra de baja administrativa.
Rolfe tiene 27 años, la misma edad que el afroamericano que murió debido a sus disparos, y trabajaba en el Departamento de Policía de Atlanta desde 2013, explicó el portavoz a ABC News.
La muerte de Brooks, en plena ola de protestas en EEUU por la violencia policial contra los afroamericanos, causó una profunda conmoción en Atlanta y provocó este sábado la dimisión de la jefa de Policía de la ciudad, Erika Shields.
Brooks falleció a tiros la noche del viernes en el aparcamiento de un restaurante de comida rápida de la cadena Wendy’s, tras resistirse a ser detenido, forcejear con los dos agentes blancos, quitarles una pistola de descarga eléctrica e intentar huir, según el Buró de Investigación de Georgia (GBI, en inglés).
La Policía acudió a la zona tras recibir un aviso de que un hombre, Brooks, estaba “dormido en un vehículo aparcado delante de la ventanilla” del restaurante, lo que dificultaba la recogida de alimentos a otros clientes, explicó el GBI.
Una conversación de media hora
Un video de la cámara que llevaba adherida al uniforme uno de los agentes, publicado este domingo por la Policía, muestra que los oficiales hablaron durante casi media hora con Brooks antes de que comenzara la confrontación.
Brooks, de pie ante los agentes en el aparcamiento, se mantuvo calmado, confirmó que había bebido “una copa y media” y cooperó con los agentes, a los que pidió que le dejaran aparcar allí su auto y caminar hasta casa de su hermana.
Los agentes confirmaron que estaba ebrio con una prueba de alcoholemia y Bronsan intentó ponerle las esposas, pero Brooks se sacudió y los tres acabaron en el suelo, con los policías advirtiéndole de que iban a darle una descarga eléctrica si se resistía.
Otro video este sábado por el GBI muestra cómo Brooks, tras quitarles la pistola de descarga eléctrica y huir de los agentes, alargó su brazo hacia atrás y apuntó aparentemente con ese objeto a Rolfe, que le perseguía.
Rolfe agarró entonces su arma y disparó a Brooks, que cayó al suelo y fue trasladado luego al hospital local, donde murió.
El GBI pidió que el público “no se apresure a la hora de llegar a conclusiones” sobre lo ocurrido, pero el caso de Brooks intensificó la indignación en las calles de Atlanta, que ya protestaba -como cientos de ciudades de EEUU- por la muerte de otros afroamericanos a manos de la policía, como ocurrió con George Floyd en mayo.
A última hora del sábado, un grupo incendió el restaurante Wendy’s en cuyo aparcamiento se produjo el incidente y otros manifestantes bloquearon temporalmente una autopista, lo que resultó en al menos 36 arrestos, indicó a Efe este domingo un portavoz de la Policía de Atlanta.
Manifestantes y curiosos se acercaron la mañana del domingo al Wendy’s, que quedó chamuscado y con apenas las paredes exteriores en pie, informó la cadena local WSB.
