El 25 de junio de 1967, más de 400 millones de personas alrededor del mundo se detuvieron de forma simultánea frente a las pantallas de sus televisores. ¿El motivo? Aquel día, la BBC, en coordinación con la European Broadcasting Union (EBU), emitió el primer programa de televisión en vivo de alcance global transmitido vía satélite.
El evento, denominado Our World, marcó un hito en la historia de la TV. Pese a ese gran mérito, hoy ese trabajo es especialmente conocido porque sirvió como espacio para que la banda más importante del planeta en aquella época, The Beatles, presentara su más reciente creación, All You Need Is Love. Con el paso de los años, la canción se convirtió en una de las más famosas de la agrupación. Pero, ¿cuál fue su impacto en la cultura popular de aquel entonces?
La génesis del track está estrechamente ligada a la puesta en marcha de Our World. Por eso, resulta vital conocer los detalles detrás de la creación televisiva antes de continuar con la historia de la pista musical. La producción de TV fue concebida por el productor de la BBC Aubrey Singer. En la realización, participaron colaboradores de 14 países distintos. Según Brian Flowers, exingeniero de EBU, la regla básica del programa era que "todo debía ser en vivo y ningún político o cabeza de estado participaría". Asimismo, señala que para el proyecto se usaron tres satélites de comunicación geoestacionales (Intelsat I, Intelsat II y ATS-1) y se necesitó el trabajo de diez mil técnicos.
Para la elaboración del contenido, cada uno de los 14 lugares colaboradores fue invitado a proponer la participación de un personaje local de trascendencia internacional. Por el lado de España, por ejemplo, estuvo Pablo Picasso. Canadá, por su parte, invitó al teórico de la comunicación Marshall McLuhan, quien fue entrevistado al inicio del evento. Los productores de la BBC decidieron que The Beatles serían los representantes idóneos de Inglaterra.
La idea era grabar a Lennon y compañía mientras trabajaban en el estudio. Según Mark Lewisohn, autor de The Complete Beatles Recording Sessions, el 22 de mayo de 1967 la BBC anunció que The Beatles participarían en la actividad. A raíz de ello, el Fab Four tuvo que preparar nuevo material. El único requisito de la BBC, de acuerdo a Lewisohn, era que el contenido del corte debía ser simple "para que los televidentes alrededor del mundo puedan entenderlo".
Pero The Beatles, quienes en esa época estaban ocupados en la elaboración de las canciones para el proyecto Magical Mystery Tour, no comenzaron a preparar el track para el programa hasta mediados de junio. El ingeniero de sonido de la agrupación, Geoff Emerick, en su libro Here, There and Everywhere: My Life Recording the Beatles, recuerda el desinterés del grupo por el tema: "Durante una de las sesiones de You Know My Name, Paul [Mccartney] le preguntó a John [Lennon], como quien no quiere la cosa: '¿Cómo te va con la canción para lo de la BBC? ¿No falta poco para la retransmisión?". John miró inquisitivo a Neil [Aspinall, asistente de la banda]. "Es dentro de un par de semanas, creo", respondió Neil. "Dios mío, ¿tan poco falta? Bueno, pues supongo que será mejor que escriba algo", replicó Lennon". Aquello que Lennon escribió fue All You Need Is Love.
Aunque el carácter improvisado y apresurado de las sesiones da cuenta del poco interés de los de Liverpool en Our World, lo cierto es que, el día del evento, la banda, desde el punto de vista de Emerick, no parecía tan despreocupada. El testimonio del ingeniero delata la presión que sentían los miembros del grupo aquella vez: "Tanto a Richard [Lush, el segundo ingeniero] como a mí nos sorprendió lo nervioso que estaba John, cosa que no era nada habitual en él. Nunca lo habíamos visto así. Fumaba como una chimenea y bebía directamente a morro de una botella de leche... Una vez que pasé por allí, le oí murmurar para sí mismo: 'Dios mío, espero no equivocarme con la letra'... Paul tenía un aspecto confiado, pero la extraña sonrisa congelada que le iluminaba el rostro delataba que la procesión iba por dentro. George [Harrison] y Ringo [Starr] parecían ser los más tranquilos de los cuatro, aunque también pude discernir la tensión en su lenguaje corporal".

No era para menos. Más de 400 millones de personas alrededor del planeta esperaban la transmisión de su nueva canción. En una jugada acertada, los productores de la BBC programaron la presentación del Fab Four para el final de Our World, exactamente a las 9 y 36 de la noche (hora británica). Sin embargo, la banda llegó mucho antes al estudio uno de Abbey Road (desde donde se enviaría la señal) para ensayar. Lewisohn precisa en The Complete Beatles Chronicles que el grupo estuvo en el lugar desde las dos de la tarde. Los ensayos junto a la orquesta se llevaron a cabo entre las 3 y las 5. Asimismo, indica que para la presentación se usaron cuatro violines, dos violonchelos, dos saxofones tenor, dos trombones, un acordeón y dos trompetas.
Pese a los nervios y al poco tiempo de preparación, la ejecución de All You Need Is Love fue todo un éxito. A las 9 y 42 de la noche The Beatles finalizaron una transmisión sin precedentes. El ambiente de fiesta que se puede apreciar, especialmente, durante los últimos segundos de la grabación evidencia la alegría de los de Liverpool. Con flores en el pelo y rodeados de personalidades (como Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Marianne Faithfull, Keith Moon, Eric Clapton, Jane Asher, Graham Nash, Gary Walker, entre otros) celebraron durante unos minutos su más reciente logro.
Obviamente, la pieza tocada en Our World lideró las listas en Inglaterra y Estados Unidos. Al revisar los rankings es posible encontrar interesantes pistas sobre el impacto del movimiento hippie en la música popular en 1967. Algo que, a su vez, da luces sobre la capacidad de Lennon, McCartney, Harrison y Starr para interpretar y representar el contexto socio-cultural de la época.
De acuerdo a Official Charts, la primera vez que All You Need Is Love apareció en el ranking inglés fue el 12 de julio de 1967, cinco días después de su lanzamiento. El tema debutó en el puesto dos, detrás de otro de los himnos del Verano del Amor:A Whiter Shade of Pale, de Procol Harum. Aquella vez, también hizo su debut en la lista el corte San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair), publicado por Scott McKenzie (pero originalmente compuesto por John Phillips, de The Mammas & The Pappas). El sencillo estuvo en el décimo tercer lugar. La semana siguiente, la creación de The Beatles alcanzó el tope del chart y se mantuvo ahí durante dos semanas más. El track fue finalmente despojado del primer puesto por el single de McKenzie, cuya letra hace clara referencia a la movida del oeste de EEUU. En agosto de aquel año, en el punto más alto del Summer of Love, ninguna de las dos creaciones salió del podio.
Algo parecido ocurrió en Estados Unidos. Según Billboard, el track compuesto por Lennon hizo su debut en el listado norteamericano, en el lugar 71, el 22 de julio de 1967. Catorce días más tarde, escaló a la tercera casilla, solo detrás del hit I Was Made To Love Her (de Stevie Wonder) y de uno de los clásicos del movimiento contracultural, Light My Fire (de The Doors).
El 19 de agosto, All You Need Is Love llegó por primera y única vez al tope de la lista. En tres de los cuatro recopilatorios del mismo mes, las pistas cantadas por Jim Morrison y John Lennon, respectivamente, se mantuvieron en el Top 3.
