El presidente de Estados Unidos, Barack Obama, ha cancelado la gira de su campaña electoral a raíz del tiroteo ocurrido en la mañana de este viernes en unos cines de Colorado. Su rival republicano, Mitt Romney, también ha cancelado todos sus actos.
Según el presidente, reconoció haber pensado en seguida qué habría pasado si sus hijas hubieran estado en esa sala y pidió "al Señor que traiga calma y cura en estos días difíciles que vienen" para las víctimas y afectados por este suceso, el peor ocurrido en el país desde la matanza en 2007 de 33 estudiantes en la universidad Virginia Tech.
"Esta mañana nos despertamos con la noticia de una tragedia que nos recuerda de todas las maneras que estamos unidos como una sola familia estadounidense", dijo el gobernante.
AYUDA DE LAS AUTORIDADES FEDERALES
Como Obama, el vicepresidente estadounidense, Joe Biden, y la primera dama, Michelle Obama, también han suspendido este viernes sus actos de campaña, según confirmó la Casa Blanca.
El presidente volverá este mismo viernes a la Casa Blanca. Había llegado el jueves a Florida para realizar una gira de dos días por varias ciudades del estado, donde empata en intención de voto sobre su posible rival republicano, Mitt Romney.
El presidente ha ofrecido también la ayuda de las autoridades federales para investigar la matanza. "La policía federal y la local han respondido al suceso y mi Gobierno hará todo lo posible para apoyar al pueblo de Aurora", ha indicado.
UNA MATANZA INSENSATA, SEGÚN ROMNEY
Por su parte, el principal candidato republicano a la presidencia de EEUU, Mitt Romney, también ha cancelado sus actos de campaña y se ha pronunciado acerca de la tragedia. En un comunicado, ha expresado que tanto él como su mujer Ann están "profundamente entristecidos por la noticia de esta violencia insensata". "Oramos por las familias y los seres queridos de las víctimas en esos momentos de inmensa pena", ha añadido.
Romney, exgobernador de Massachussetts, que será confirmado el mes que viene como candidato presidencial republicano, es un firme defensor de la segunda enmienda de la Constitución, que defiende el derecho de la ciudadanía a poseer armas de fuego.
En Estados Unidos hay más de 300 millones de armas de fuego en posesión de los ciudadanos. En cada ciclo electoral, la Asociación Nacional del Rifle vuelca todo su respaldo en los candidatos republicanos que obstruyen las iniciativas para restringir la venta de armas de fuego.
