Trump pide superar las "pasiones del momento" tras las protestas en EEUU
El mandatario ha dado las gracias a la Guardia Nacional “por responder con precisión” para devolver el “imperio de la ley a nuestras calles”.
El presidente estadounidense, Donald Trump, ha pedido este sábado superar las “pasiones y prejuicios del momento” y confiar en las instituciones, frente a más de 1.100 cadetes recién graduados en la academia militar de West Point.
El mandatario ha dado un discurso leído en el que ha evitado pronunciarse sobre las diferencias que mantiene con la cúpula militar por las formas en las que se han utilizado las Fuerzas Armadas en la respuesta a los disturbios contra la brutalidad policial de las últimas semanas.
“Lo que hace a Estados Unidos único es la durabilidad de las instituciones frente a las pasiones y prejuicios del momento. Cuando los tiempos son turbulentos, cuando el camino es arduo, lo que más importa es lo que nos hace permanentes, atemporales, sólidos y eternos”, ha señalado.
Trump, que hizo que la cuna de la élite militar estadounidense -que llevaba en casa desde marzo debido a la crisis del coronavirus- regresara a los barracones para esta ceremonia, ha dado las gracias a la Guardia Nacional “por responder con precisión” para devolver el “imperio de la ley a nuestras calles”.
Esa rama de reservistas de las Fuerzas Armadas, que controlan los estados, fue utilizada para contener los disturbios en varios estados del país tras la muerte del afroamericano George Floyd durante una detención en mayo.
El presidente estadounidense amenazó con la posibilidad desde el inicio de los disturbios de desplegar a unidades de las Fuerzas Armadas para contener los altercados que se han dado en varias ciudades del país en las protestas raciales, la mayoría pacíficas.
El secretario de Defensa, Mark Esper, se opuso a este movimiento inusual y extremo, mientras que el jefe del Estado Mayor Conjunto, el general Mark Milley, lamentó haber participado hace dos semanas en la disolución por la fuerza de manifestantes pacíficos frente a la Casa Blanca para que Trump se hiciera una foto con la Biblia en la mano y condenara las protestas.
