Los expertos en autoritarismo que temían las inclinaciones de Trump durante su campaña y sus primeros años de legislatura ahora están haciendo sonar las alarmas. Este lunes, el presidente utilizó a la Policía para dispersar a los manifestantes congregados en los aledaños de la Casa Blanca utlizando gas lacrimógeno, granadas cegadoras, spray pimienta y otras tácticas agresivas, solo para hacerse una foto frente a una iglesia a la que no asiste mientras sostenía una Biblia.
“Fue un resumen de todo lo que es un autócrata”, señala Gail Helt, antigua analista de la CIA durante 12 años encargada de vigilar señales de autoritarismo en países asiáticos. “Mostrando que lleva las riendas del poder, esa imagen sosteniendo la Biblia... No sé de qué iba, pero fue inquietante”.
Ni la Casa Blanca ni el equipo de Trump han querido responder las preguntas del HuffPost sobre sus tendencias autoritarias ni sobre si las intensificará a medida que se acerquen unas elecciones que quizás le saquen de la Casa Blanca.
En los últimos meses, Trump ha arremetido contra el voto por correo, un proceso extendido en algunos estados y al que se están adaptando otros por temor a que el voto presencial propague el coronavirus. Trump ha reiterado que autorizar el voto por correo permitiría a los demócratas hacer trampas, pese a que él, su secretaria de prensa y uno de sus consejeros de mayor confianza han votado por correo en elecciones anteriores.
“EL VOTO POR CORREO PROVOCARÁ FRAUDES Y ABUSOS MASIVOS. TAMBIÉN SUPONDRÁ EL FIN DE NUESTRO GRAN PARTIDO REPUBLICANO”, afirmó en Twitter la semana pasada.
Los detractores de Trump, tanto demócratas como republicanos, temen que esté sentando las bases para impugnar los resultados de las elecciones en caso de que las pierda con el fin de mantenerse en el cargo apelando a sus poderes de emergencia.

Trump ha mostrado pequeños atisbos de su poder desde que es presidente, pero ha dejado clara en múltiples ocasiones la autoridad que le confiere la Constitución: “Por el artículo II, tengo derecho a hacer lo que quiera como presidente”, les dijo a sus seguidores el pasado verano.
No parece tener la autoridad de anular una derrota electoral, pero sus críticos advierten de que las consecuencias de afirmaciones como esa en gran parte dependen de los miembros de su gabinete y de los republicanos del Congreso. Y eso preocupa a los republicanos que se oponen a él.
“La cuestión no es qué está dispuesto a hacer Trump, sino cuánto le van a consentir las personas que le rodean. Ya sabemos de qué es capaz Trump”, comenta Tom Nichols, profesor de la Escuela de Guerra Naval de Estados Unidos.
“Trump es un matón rodeado por hombres y mujeres débiles ansiosos por estar cerca del poder. No distingue entre el bien y el mal y hará cualquier cosa”, opina Stuart Stevens, asesor republicano en las campañas de George W. Bush y Mitt Romney. “La carga la sufre el Partido Republicano. En nuestro sistema, los partidos también deberían funcionar como cortafuegos. Trump ha elogiado en numerosas ocasiones a dictadores y ha defendido la violencia como herramienta de control social.
En 1990, tras las terribles medidas adoptadas para detener las protestas en Pekín, Trump dijo: “Cuando los estudiantes abarrotaron la plaza de Tiananmén, el Gobierno casi la lía. Luego fueron despiadados, terribles, pero sofocaron la rebelión mediante la fuerza. Eso demuestra el poder de la fuerza”.
En 2015, cuando aspiraba a la presidencia, Trump ensalzó varias veces al presidente ruso Vladimir Putin y llegó a decir que era un líder mejor que Barack Obama. En 2016, Trump mostró sus respetos a Kim Jong Un por asesinar a su tío y a otras personas para consolidar su poder. “Fue increíble, se cargó a su tío, a este, al otro...”, declaró.
En 2018, habló con admiración del presidente chino Xi Jinping por haber sido capaz de modificar la Constitución y anular el límite de legislaturas que podía estar al frente del país. En la actualidad, está tratando de volver a incluir a Rusia en el G7, una organización de grandes economías democráticas, pese a que Putin planea ser presidente hasta 2036 y sigue teniendo el control de una porción de Ucrania, motivo por el que fue expulsado del G8.
Trump, durante sus años en la Casa Blanca, también ha defendido el uso de la violencia. En 2017 les dijo a los agentes de policía que no se preocuparan si le golpeaban la cabeza a los detenidos al meterlos al coche. En una videoconferencia con los gobernadores este lunes, les abroncó por no “dominar” las calles de sus ciudades.
“Si no las domináis, estáis perdiendo el tiempo. Os dominarán a vosotros. Parecéis una panda de imbéciles”, les espetó.
“Soy vuestro presidente del orden público”, declaró horas después desde la Explanada Sur de la Casa Blanca mientras policías y militares despejaban a los manifestantes de un parque para ir a hacerse su foto con la Biblia.
“Trump es una amenaza. Ni siquiera tiene sentido intentar predecir cuál será la siguiente atrocidad que se le ocurrirá, pero lo que ha dejado claro es que no hay ningún límite moral, legal ni de ningún otro tipo que no esté dispuesto a cruzar para ayudarle a retener el poder”, afirma Daniela Martins, secretaria de prensa de la organización progresista Priorities USA.
Ruth Ben-Ghiat, experta en autoritarismo de la Universidad de Nueva York, explica que lo que hizo Trump desalojando Lafayette Square el lunes fue un caso digno de estudiarse en los libros.

“Fue un espectáculo autoritario respaldado con fuerza real al sacar a los militares a las calles”, asevera. “Un cóctel con todos los ingredientes que el autoritarismo ha utilizado a lo largo de la historia: un líder al margen de la ley que ataca a los manifestantes, utiliza la religión como pretexto y le declara la guerra a su propia gente”.
Pero lo que más le preocupa es la presencia y el apoyo del fiscal general William Barr y el Secretario de Defensa Mark Esper.
“Son sus herramientas ahora”, indica Ben-Ghiat. “Va a hacer lo que sea necesario para ser reelegido, como ordenar la intervención militar para acabar con las protestas”.
Helt, que ahora dirige el programa de Estudios de Seguridad e Inteligencia de la King University de Bristol, fue testigo de cómo la democracia de Malasia se desmoronó en 2011 tras unas manifestaciones contra el Gobierno, pero nunca pensó que podía pasar lo mismo en Estados Unidos.
“Es muy inquietante ver cómo el presidente se convierte en la amenaza más apremiante que nos acecha”, lamenta.
