Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band fue el disco que revolucionó el rock. El octavo trabajo de Los Beatles, presentado el 1 de junio de 1967, marcó un antes y un después en la historia de la música. Pero no sólo por el aspecto puramente musical, su carátula también fue revolucionaria, una de las más ambiciosas hasta el momento.
John, Paul, Ringo y George juntaron en este álbum a más de 50 personajes relevantes de la Historia en una imagen que desde el minuto uno se convirtió en icónica. El pintor Peter Blake y su entonces mujer, la también artista pop Jann Haworth, firman esta portada que se ha recreado hasta la saciedad. Los personajes de Star Wars , los de Barrio Sésamo , Los Simpson o el grupo The Mothers han sido sólo algunos de los que la han homenajeado.
La imagen, que ilustra el primer disco de la historia con las letras de las canciones impresas, está rodeada de curiosidades, tantas como personajes aparecen en ella. En la elección de esos rostros trabajaron los dos artistas y tres de los miembros del grupo. El batería Ringo Starr prefirió delegar en sus compañeros.
De todos esos personajes que aparecen en el collage, sólo hay cuatro que hoy están vivos: el propio Ringo Starr, el beatle Paul McCartney, el cantante Bob Dylan y el artista Larry Bell. La portada cuenta además con maniquíes (incluidos los de los propios miembros de la banda de Liverpool) y otros elementos como un aparato de televisión, una muñeca de la diosa hindú Lakshmī o una figura de piedra de Blancanieves.
Los que no aparecen representados, pero sí se barajaron en su día, fueron Jesucristo Adolf Hitler o el actor Leo Gorcey . Este último se quedó fuera porque pedía 400 libras por derechos de imagen . Quien sí entró a última hora fue la actriz Mae West, que había rechazado aparecer en la portada, pero cambió de opinión tras una carta que los integrantes del grupo le enviaron pidiendo su autorización. Aparece en la fila de arriba, en la tercera posición empezando por la izquierda.
En esta foto interactiva puedes ver todos los componentes de esta icónica foto: los personaje que aparecen rodeados de rojo ya habían fallecido en 1967, los de azul murieron después, los de amarillo pertenecen a maniquíes o modelos de cera y los de verde son los que están vivos hoy.
