Kobe Bryant, exjugador de baloncesto de Los Angeles Lakers y excompañero de Pau Gasol en el equipo angelino, ha fallecido este domingo a los 41 años en un accidente de helicóptero.
El siniestro se ha producido en Calabasas (Los Ángeles, EEUU), cuando Bryant viajaba con otras ocho personas en su helicóptero privado —la nave “Two Echo X-ray”, de la compañía Sikorsky S-76B, y un registro de cola No. N72EX—, se estrelló y se incendió. Todos los ocupantes fallecieron. Uno de ellos era Gianna Maria Onore, una de los tres hijos del deportista, de 13 años.
El accidente tuvo lugar sobre las 10:00 de la mañana hora local, a la altura de las calles Las Virgenes Road y Agoura Road, en una pequeña zona montañosa y en medio de unas malas condiciones atmosféricas marcadas por una densa niebla. El aparato impactó con el suelo y se vio envuelto en llamas de inmediato, lo que dificultó la intervención de bomberos y sanitarios.
Tanto Kobe Bryant como si hija iban a la Mamba Academy para un entrenamiento de baloncesto. La academia se encuentra en Thousand Oaks, cerca de donde sucedió todo.
Esta zona californiana se despertó el domingo con una intensa niebla, aunque se desconoce si esa fue la causa del accidente, que está bajo investigación de Junta Nacional de Seguridad en el Transporte y la Administración Federal de Aviación de EEUU.
El Departamento de Policía de Los Ángeles sí ha aclarado que dio la orden el domingo por la mañana de hacer aterrizar todos sus helicópteros debido a las malas condiciones para volar. Sin embargo, el helicóptero en el que viajaba el exjugador decidió volar.
Testigos de lo ocurrido aseguran haber escuchado el sonido de un motor fallando antes de que el helicóptero se estrellara.
Nada más conocerse la noticia, muchos se han acercado a los alrededores del Staples Center, el pabellón donde juegan Los Angeles Lakers, para rendir homenaje a Bryant.
Además, se han guardado minutos de silencio antes de los partidos de la NBA que se han disputado este domingo.
Adiós a una leyenda
Con la muerte de Bryant se va uno de los mejores jugadores de baloncesto de la historia. Durante su extensa carrera en Los Angeles Lakers, su único equipo en la NBA, logró cinco títulos, siendo dos veces MVP de las finales y una vez MVP de la temporada regular. Bryant, nacido en Philadelphia, puso fin a su exitosa carrera en abril de 2016 tras jugar 20 temporadas en los Lakers.
Además, fue 18 veces All-Star, de las que cuatro veces logró ser elegido mejor jugador. Formó 11 veces en el mejor quinteto de la liga y ganó un concurso de mates.
Bryant ostenta el segundo récord de anotación de la NBA, con 81 puntos. Además, es el cuarto en anotación histórica de la NBA.

Son muchos los jugadores y exjugadores de baloncesto que han reaccionado a la terrible noticia. El exjugador Michael Jordan se ha reconocido “conmocionado” por y ha mostrado su “dolor” por la despedida de alguien a quien consideraba “un hermano pequeño”.
“Estoy conmocionado por la trágica noticia del fallecimiento de Kobe y Gianna. Las palabras no pueden describir el dolor que siento. Amaba a Kobe, era como un hermano pequeño para mí. Solíamos hablar a menudo y echaré mucho de menos esas charlas. Era un gran competidor, uno de los grandes del baloncesto y una fuerza creativa”, apuntó en un comunicado.
Además, ‘Air Jordan’ subrayó que “Kobe también fue un padre increíble que amaba profundamente a la familia y se enorgullecía del amor de su hija por el baloncesto”. “Yvette se une a mí para enviar mis más sinceras condolencias a Vanessa (esposa de Bryant), a los Lakers y los aficionados de todo el mundo”, añadió.
