El papa Francisco se entrevistó hoy con el principal líder religioso chií, el ayatolá Ali Al Sistani, en Nayaf (Irak), en un gesto considerado histórico en las relaciones entre el Vaticano y el islam, pero sin la presencia de los focos de las cámaras.
Sólo se pudo ver a Francisco que entró en la modesta casa de Al Sistani, en uno de los barrios humildes de Nayaf, rodeado de las fuerzas de seguridad.
Se trató del primer acto de la jornada del papa, que este viernes llegó a Irak para una visita de tres días y se convirtió en el primer pontífice en pisar este país.
Como señalaron hace unos días algunos expertos, Francisco tuvo que respetar el protocolo y quitarse los zapatos antes de entrar en la habitación de Al Sistani.
La duda, ya que no hubo imágenes, es si Al Sistani, que normalmente permanece sentado al recibir a sus visitas, como se había filtrado se puso en pie para recibir a Francisco, un gesto que nunca habría tenido.
Francisco viajó a esta ciudad sagrada, a unos 160 kilómetros al sur de Bagdad, principal centro religioso de esta rama del islam y destino de peregrinación de chiíes de todo el mundo.
La ciudad alberga la tumba de una de los figuras más veneradas del islamismo, Ali, primo y yerno de Mahoma y el primer hombre en convertirse al islam.
No hubo un documento común como el que firmaron en Abu Dabi hace dos años el papa y el jeque egipcio Ahmad al Tayyeb, Gran Imán de Al Azhar, la mayor institución suní, y que fue uno de los mayores pasos en las relaciones entre el islam y el catolicismo.
Pero la reunión en sí, como aseguraron algunos expertos, era el mensaje, ya que el ayatolá, de 90 años, nacido en Irán, es un guía espiritual muy apreciado por su sobriedad y sabiduría, incluso por quienes no pertenecen a la rama chií.
Sus fetuas (“fatwa”), edictos religiosos, hicieron que se movilizasen en 2014 contra el Estado Islámico y en enero de 2019 Ali al Sistani pidió investigar los “crímenes atroces” perpetrados por los yihadistas contra algunas minorías de la sociedad iraquí, como los yazidíes en Sinyar, los cristianos en Mosul y los turcomanos en Tal Afar.
