Por qué EEUU ha hecho fiesta nacional el 'Juneteenth' o 19 de junio
Senado y Congreso por fin se ponen de acuerdo en una fecha clave en la historia del país.
Corren nuevos tiempos en EEUU. Su Cámara de Representantes ha aprobado por aplastante mayoría —415 votos a favor y solo 14 en contra, todos republicanos— declarar como fiesta nacional el 19 de junio, conocido como Juneteenth (nombre derivado del año y el mes, en inglés), en conmemoración del fin de la esclavitud en el país, tras el ‘sí’ por unanimidad del Senado.
Ese día, en 1865, el estado de Texas otorgó la libertad a los últimos esclavos negros que quedaban en el país. Miles de trabajadores forzados recibieron la libertad ‘de facto’ coincidiendo con los últimos embates de la Guerra de Secesión en EEUU.
Texas fue el último estado en hacerlo, la resistencia confederada, pero se rindió a los derechos humanos más de dos años después de que el presidente Abraham Lincoln firmase la Proclamación de Emancipación, que otorgaba la libertad a todos los esclavos, más de 3,5 millones de afroamericanos.
Así lo anunció el general Granger, mayor del Ejército de la Unión, a su llegada a la ciudad de Galveston, Texas, como recogió el New York Times el mismo 19 de junio de 1865:
Se informa al pueblo de Texas que, de acuerdo con una proclama del Ejecutivo de los Estados Unidos, todos los esclavos son libres. Esto implica una igualdad absoluta de derechos personales y derechos de propiedad entre antiguos amos y esclavos, y la conexión que hasta ahora existe entre ellos se convierte en la conexión entre el empleador y el trabajo asalariado.
Se aconseja a los libertos que permanezcan en silencio en sus hogares actuales y trabajen por un salario. Se les informa que no se les permitirá recolectar en los puestos militares y que no serán apoyados en la inactividad ni allí ni en ningún otro lugar.

“Conmemorar el 19 de junio como fiesta nacional abordará esta brecha ignorada durante mucho tiempo en nuestra historia, reconocerá el mal que se hizo, reconocerá el dolor y el sufrimiento de generaciones de esclavos y sus descendientes y finalmente celebrará su libertad”, señaló el senador demócrata Edward Markley, uno de los impulsores del proyecto.
Cambio radical en un año
En el Senado la ley ha encontrado una unanimidad que no vivió un año antes. En 2020 (con Trump aún en la Casa Blanca) sufrió el bloqueo del republicano Ron Johnson, quien esta vez ha apoyado su tramitación como fiesta nacional, eso sí, un apoyo de aquella manera:
“Aunque apoyo firmemente la celebración de la emancipación, objeté el costo y la falta de debate. Si bien todavía parece extraño que ahora se requiera que los contribuyentes proporcionen tiempo libre remunerado a los empleados federales para celebrar el fin de la esclavitud, está claro que el Congreso no tiene ganas de seguir discutiendo el asunto”, apunta en un comunicado el senador conservador.
Hasta ahora, el Juneteenth era una fiesta ‘real’ en 46 estados y una festividad no oficial a nivel nacional. Con la firma de Joe Biden, el 19 de junio ya es, oficialmente, un día para todo EEUU.
