Según las últimas informaciones aportadas por la cadena televisiva Norteamérica Fox News, la polícia ha entrado en el apartamento James Holmes, presunto autor de los disparos, en un tiroteo en Denver, Colorado en el que han muerto 12 personas y 50 más han resultado heridas. Todas ellas presenciaban el estreno de la nueva película de Batman, El Caballero oscuro: La leyenda renace.
Una unidad de las fuerzas especiales ha entrado por una de las ventanas del edificio, en el barrio de Aurora, para acceder a la tercera planta donde reside Holmes. Según ha informado Dan Oates, jefe local de policia, la polícia ha tenido que acceder a la vivienda con sumo cuidado, ya que durante su detención y posterior interrogatorio, el detenido ha reconocido que almacenaba diversas armas y bombas de gas en su domicilio. Según la polícia de Denver "una trampa explosiva", razón por la cual han tenido que evacuar las zonas colindantes del edificio.
El tiroteo comenzó cerca de las 00.30 horas (8.30 hora peninsular). Unos 15 minutos después de que la película empezara un hombre vestido de negro y con una máscara de gas entró en la sala nueve del cine Century 16 de la localidad de Aurora e hizo explotar una granada de humo en medio de la sala de cine. Después, comenzó a disparar, según ha asegurado una emisora de radio local.
Según informa la cadena de televisión 9News-la emisora local de NBC- el hombre ha sido detenido por la policía local. Las autoridades han asegurado que el sospechoso dice haber instalado explosivos en su casa y en el parking del cine. Oates ha asegurado que no hay evidencia de que exista un segundo atacante.
El portavoz del departamento de Policía de Aurora, Frank Fania, ha explicado a la televisión que Holmes portaba un rifle, una escopeta, una pistola y chaleco antibala y que aún se desconocen los motivos de su acción.
"Los testigos han dicho que el hombre apareció en el frente de la sala, pero no es claro si salió de atrás de la pantalla o por una de las puertas, y comenzó a disparar", ha explicado Fania.
El edificio donde vive el sospechoso, en el norte de Aurora, está siendo inspeccionado por equipos especiales antibombas. Dave Joly, jefe del FBI en Denver, ha señalado que tal vez haya explosivos en el inmueble por lo que unas 20 personas han sido evacuadas.
Un testigo ha dicho a la emisora de televisión que escuchó los disparos pero el público pensó que era parte de los efectos especiales de la película. "El tipo disparaba, sin darnos oportunidad de salir del cine", ha comentado a la cadena 9News.
Otro testigo ha declarado a la cadena CNN que escuchó entre diez y veinte disparos de armas de fuego y una explosión. Entre los heridos hay algunos niños, entre ellos un menor de tres meses, que han sido trasladados a hospitales de la localidad.
La policía había informado que 14 personas habían fallecido en el ataque, sin embargo, tras verificar los cuerpos en el cine han señalado que son 12.
El presidente de EEUU, Barack Obama, ha expresado en un comunicado que él y su esposa, Michelle Obama, están "impactados y muy tristes" por el tiroteo en Denver. Obama ha asegurado que las fuerzas federales están trabajando en la zona y que su administración apoyará a las víctimas en la localidad de Aurora.
